A Boy Looks On : Fatah Rally, Aida Camp, Bethlehem

This image was taken in Aida Refugee Camp, Bethlehem in November 2007 at a rally on the third anniversary of Yasser Arafat’s death. Gigantic banners had been hung on buildings overlooking the makeshift arena in the shadow of the separation wall and I caught this young boy peering out from the edges of one banner. Despite the apparent eulogising of violence in the banners, the event was extremely peaceful – unlike the deaths in Gaza on the same day where Hamas and Fatah clashed. Of course, there’s something symbolic in this image – will yet another generation go by until a solution to the Arab-Israeli conflict is found.

I was living in the camp at the time and was the only non-Arab at the event. I felt completely safe.
