At The Barricades, Kathmandu

This image was made in Durbar Square, Kathmandu in March 2006 just as popular unrest against the King was to erupt in mass protests. I was very fortunate that both subjects were prepared to be photographed like this - effectively expressionless, neither willing, nor unwilling, subjects. It is the double juxtaposition - and contrast -  of, firstly, a heavily armed soldier with the middle-aged woman casually having a rest and, secondly, the ornate carved structure with sand-bags (oddly colour-coordinated with the green of the arcade) making an improvised military post, that is the image's theme.
